❄️Due to road conditions in parts of our district and the prediction of more snow this afternoon, North Mason School District will be closed today.

💙 Recognizing Empathy 💙
Today, as part of the building administration appreciation series, we highlight Katie Sprague, our nurse at Hawkins Middle School. Assistant Principal Kevin Pattison made the nomination, sharing that, "Katie has a passion for our students and is always going above and beyond to understand a student's background and creative ways that she can help, whether this be outside agencies, meetings with admin, or anything else that will help students."
Congratulations on this nomination, Katie! We appreciate all you do!

💙 Recognizing Empathy 💙
Katelin Lacoste, counselor at Hawkins Middle School, is being nominated by Principal Kalahan for this month's trait of 'Empathy.' He shares, " Katelin's nature is to be empathetic with others and it shows in the way she works with staff and students."
Congratulations on this acknowledgement Katelin! We all thank you for the support you provide our students.

💙 Before we dive into celebrating our employees who have been nominated by admin for the trait of 'Empathy,' we have one more employee to highlight for the trait of 'Gratitude.' Apologies to Michele Peterson for not sharing this recognition prior to the break.
Assistant Principal Kevin Pattison, Hawkins Middle School, shared this: “Michele exudes gratitude every day in her role running our Huskies Solution Project (HSP) room and she always works hard to do what is best for students.”
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Michele!
Next up we will be highlighting staff members nominated by administration for bringing the trait of empathy to their role with the district. Stay tuned!

Have a wonderful long weekend, Huskies! See you back here on Tuesday, January 21st!

CTE Careers Highlighted by West Sound Tech Guest Speaker
West Sound Tech came to speak to 8th grade science and 7th grade computer science classes today! Tony Sharpe, who teaches the animation and video game design program at WST came and talked about the offered programs and opportunities for students coming up in their near future. West Sound Tech offers programs such as welding, cosmetology, medical careers, construction, video game design, and more coming with the addition of their new building: dentistry, HVAC, early childhood, and more. Got kids thinking about careers in CTE!
Thank you to teacher Hannah Kidd for sharing this with our community and highlighting the power of this partnership between North Mason and West Sound Tech that provides our students so many amazing CTE career opportunities to explore!

💚 Leading with Gratitude 💚
This week we highlight Julie Moosman, recognized by the administration for the trait of gratitude and what she brings to her role as Board Certified Behavior Analyst for the district. Amber Nygard, Director of Inclusive Education, shares, "Julie is in a role that is new to North Mason this year and has stepped in and done amazingly with students and staff. She is always professional and gracious for the opportunity to serve the students in any way that she can. She is working with our staff as well and helping us all learn ways to appreciate the uniqueness of the students we serve and helps our educators be better each day. Julie truly seems to be grateful for the opportunity to work at NM but we are the ones that are grateful that she has chosen to work with us!”
Thank you, Julie, for making an impact with our students and staff!

Real-World Connections
"Last Thursday, Jon and Rebecca Hobson visited 6th grade science in Mr. Wells, Ms. Kivi, and Ms. Kidd's classes to talk about Hecla Mining, what Jon's job is like up in Alaska, and how science connects to his daily job. 6th graders have been learning about rock types and how they form, so learning about what minerals miners look for was a great connection to what we've been working on. Thank you to Jon and Rebecca, who took time out of their lives to spend their day with 6th grade! "
Thank you, Hannah Kidd, for sharing this glimpse into the interesting learning opportunity our 6th grade science students experienced, and for taking the time to highlight two guest volunteers!

The theme for National School Psychology Week is, Spark Discovery,” recognizing the work that school psychologists do to help their communities seek out new ideas, effect change, and expand horizons for children and youth. One of our school psychologists, Chasity Johnson, shares what sparks her to do this important work. “I am driven by a passion for helping others, embracing teamwork, and honoring every person’s unique worth. I believe that joy is found in the little moments, and each day is a chance to make a positive impact.”
Thank you to all of our school psychologists, Chasity Johnson, Maria Gent, Annie Kuznik, and Anthony Wilborn, for supporting our students through your commitment to this important work.

🥎 HMS fastpitch played at home yesterday on what was a perfect fall evening with the sunlight streaming through the trees. The team had a convincing win against Cedar Heights but what the score doesn't show was the incredible teamwork amongst our players, the amazing support of family, friends and coaches, and the genuine sportsmanship and camaraderie that existed between the two teams. It was North Mason at its finest. Well done, Huskies!
Seen in these photos are rising freshman being celebrated after playing their last ever middle school home game. Good luck to our future Bulldogs!

Happy National Principals Month! Sending a huge thank you to our incredible principals who lead with dedication and inspire our students every day. Your impact is invaluable! #ThankAPrincipal #NationalPrincipalsMonth

🎉TIME FOR A PARTY! 🎉
Students collected staff signatures throughout the month of September when they were recognized as being Prepared, Always Respectful, Working Hard or being Safe. At the end of the month they exchanged their PAWS cards for admission to the PAWS party! Activities students could choose from included drawing, Kahoot, gym sports, field sports, board games, movies and music.
Feedback about the event was really positive, some students saying that they enjoyed spending time with friends doing a favorite activity, while others shared that they felt rewarded for completing their work. These PAWS parties will be held each month to acknowledge, and CELEBRATE, students who model these Hawkins' principles.
Great job, Huskies!
(Thank you to Laura Pugh for sharing these photos and information.)

Hawkins MS ended the week with their first spirit assembly of the year that more resembled the opening ceremonies at the Olympics. Students sat with their advisories, waving posters and cheering to celebrate the launch of their Olympic theme. The festivities began with a timed trivia challenge that had the volume in the room increasing after every answer. The year-long competition groups students by their advisories and is designed to increase participation, boost charity drives, and highlight other projects that will be rolled out over the course of the year.
Let the games begin!

Our Families Show Up!
It was a great turnout at the annual Open House/Curriculum Night, where parents and guardians got an inside peek into what's happening at Hawkins Middle School. Families were greeted by Principal Kalahan and Assistant Principal Pattison who were excited to share an overview of the many extracurricular activities available to students.
After a short introduction from the school counselors, families visited classrooms with their student, following a shortened version of their daily schedule. Teachers were able to share the curriculum and give parents and guardians a glimpse into their classrooms. North Mason School District Family Resources and other community partners were also available in the commons to answer questions about valuable resources and programs available to our students.
Thank you to all our families and students who took the time to come out and participate, and share their ENTHUSIASM for the year ahead. It's going to be an amazing year, Huskies!

YOU ARE INVITED! Open House & Curriculum Night is TONIGHT from 5:30-7:30 pm. Starts promptly at 5:30 pm. Great opportunity to hear from administration and staff about all things Hawkins. Hope you can make it!
